About Lapsang Souchong & Mr. Jiang

Located in the heart of Wuyishan Nature Preserve, the Lapsang Company is the creator of the world’s Black teas. Mr. Jiang, 24th generation heritage Black tea master, is at the helm of the Lapsang company and is the direct descendant of the tea masters who invented Black tea.  Wuyishan’s Nature Preserve is the richest and most bio diversified eco-system at the same latitude. This pristine mountain region is so exclusive that foreigners are forbidden to enter. Our film crew was fortunate to film on the ground and captured incredible footage with Mr. Jiang telling the incredible story of how his forefathers invented Lapsang Souchong. This wonderful account makes for a fascinating chapter in 9 DRAGONS TEA, giving viewers an exclusive glimpse of this world-changing tea’s history and, more importantly, on-site at the holy land of tea.

Wuyishan – The Heart of Tea

There is a saying: “Wuyishan is a story of a pot of tea.”  or in Chinese, “Wuyi Shan Shui Yi Wu Cha,”  meaning Wuyi mountains and waters, makes for a pot of tea.

Throughout Chinese tea history, Wuyishan is renowned as one of the finest tea regions. So famous that the world’s greatest plant-hunter/tea raider, Robert Fortune, called Wuyishan the “Land Of Tea,” where he infiltrated hundreds of miles beyond the treaty ports to smuggle the finest tea-seeds, tea-plants, tea-makers and tea-making secrets from Wuyishan to India.

Fortune’s tea-raid in China makes a great final chapter in the film. Learn more about how tea came to India.

Why Wuyi Tea Is Supreme

Did you know that there are over 800 varietals in the Wuyi Mountains? The over-abundance of tea varietals makes Wuyishan the “heart of tea,” in my opinion.

Have you ever heard of the famous poem of 7-Cup by Lu Tong in the Tang Dynasty (about two thousand years ago)? Legend said that Lu Tong tasted Wuyi tea. Impressed by its signature rock terroir, the Tang poet coined the famous term “Rock’s milk,” immortalizing Wuyi tea.

Wuyishan Tea-Making Culture & Traditions

Wuyishan’s ancient tea culture traces back to over 2,000 years. In the mid-1600s, the people of Wuyishan invented Oolong tea and Black tea.  In the film 9 DRAGONS TEA, we trace the origin stories for both types of tea.

Of all of the six types of tea, Oolong tea is the most intricate and complex to make, with a long production cycle. By comparison, tea-makers make Green teas in a day, for instance.

The Wuyi handcrafted Oolong technique earned the top honor as the only tea-making technique on China’s Cultural Heritage List in 2006. It’s worth noting that Oolong tea is synonymous with Wuyi Rock Tea.

While filming 9 DRAGONS TEA, I’ve learned from the great tea masters that: “Tea-making is a discipline for the tea master as well as for the tea leaves.”

As Bruce Richardson, an American tea historian who also appears in the film, so eloquently puts it:  “Tea makes us feel more human.”

Other Supreme Heritage Teas

I was blessed with the opportunity of tasting some exquisite Oolong teas during the filming in Wuyishan. Here at our store, I’d like to share with you a few Exclusive Editions of Supreme Oolong teas, produced by heritage Oolong tea masters:

Oolong tea’s health benefits are well-known among Chinese people, such as cutting grease to help weight loss.

Additional Information

QUANTITY:

Only one gift box available. 200 grams. 25 pouches x 8 grams per pouch.

BREWING:

Chinese tea connoisseurs taste tea with 8 grams per brew.

Have you heard of Gong Fu Cha? Or Kung Fu Tea, Kung Fu Cha? The Buddhist monks who invented Oolong tea created this taste ritual for the tea. This Zen Tea Ceremony is still in practice today. We enjoyed capturing this ancient tea ritual in Wuyishan filming, and my stress level dissipated as I watched the monks methodically brew the tea.

Wuyi Rock Tea or Wuyi Oolong is famous for its long-lasting brew. Usually, the third brew is the best. Wuyi Rock Tea is so durable in a tasting, for me, up to 9 or 10 steeps.
